100 Mile House sits at the geographic and cultural heart of the BC Cariboo, on the historic Gold Rush Trail that once carried prospectors north toward the goldfields of Barkerville. Today it is a thriving service centre for the South Cariboo region, surrounded by hundreds of lakes, vast forests, and the rolling ranch country that defines this part of British Columbia. The town takes its name from the old Cariboo Wagon Road milestone system — it was exactly 100 miles from Lillooet, the starting point of the original road north. That heritage is still visible in the community's character: 100 Mile House has the practical, self-reliant spirit of a working ranching and forestry town, with a strong sense of community and a genuine welcome for travellers passing through. The South Cariboo is one of BC's premier fishing destinations. The region is dotted with hundreds of lakes — Canim Lake, Lac La Hache, Bridge Lake, Horse Lake, and dozens more — that offer excellent rainbow trout fishing from spring through fall. The 108 Golf Resort and the surrounding ranch country make this a popular destination for golfers, and the network of trails and back roads draws hikers, mountain bikers, and ATV riders throughout the summer. In winter, 100 Mile House transforms into one of BC's top cross-country skiing destinations. The 100 Mile House Nordic Ski Club maintains an extensive trail network, and the area regularly hosts major Nordic skiing events. The wide, flat terrain and reliable snowpack make it ideal for skiers of all abilities. The community is also a gateway to the Cariboo's ranching heritage. Guest ranches in the surrounding area offer horseback riding, cattle drives, and an authentic taste of BC's cowboy culture that has been a part of this landscape since the 1860s.
