Barriere

North Thompson River country — a ranching and logging town surrounded by wilderness.

Barriere sits on the North Thompson River about an hour north of Kamloops, a small town with a big landscape. The surrounding country is classic BC Interior — rolling grasslands, pine forests, and river valleys that stretch toward the mountains in every direction. Ranching and logging have been the economic backbone of the community for generations, and that heritage is visible in the character of the town. The town was devastated by the 2003 McLure-Barriere wildfire, one of the most destructive in BC history, but the community rebuilt with remarkable resilience. Today Barriere is a welcoming stop for travellers on Highway 5, with good services, fuel, and a genuine small-town character that reflects the strength of the people who call this valley home. The North Thompson River here is excellent for fishing, and the surrounding hills offer hiking, ATV riding, and wildlife viewing. Moose, black bear, and deer are commonly seen throughout the valley. The area is also known for its rodeo culture, with the local rodeo grounds hosting events that draw competitors from across the Interior. Louis Creek, just south of town, is a quiet community with a strong sense of local identity.
