Dawson Creek

Mile Zero of the Alaska Highway — where the great northern adventure begins.

Dawson Creek holds a unique place in Canadian history as Mile Zero of the Alaska Highway — the starting point of one of the most ambitious construction projects in North American history. Built in just eight months in 1942 by the US Army Corps of Engineers to supply Alaska during the Second World War, the Alaska Highway stretches 2,237 kilometres through some of the most remote wilderness on the continent, ending at Delta Junction, Alaska. The Mile Zero post in downtown Dawson Creek is one of the most photographed landmarks in northern BC, and the Alaska Highway House museum tells the remarkable story of the highway's construction — the thousands of soldiers and civilian workers who carved a road through muskeg, mountains, and boreal forest in conditions that would stop most modern projects cold. The Walter Wright Pioneer Village preserves the agricultural heritage of the Peace Country, with heritage buildings and artifacts from the early settler era. Dawson Creek sits in the heart of the Peace River country, a vast agricultural region that produces grain, canola, and livestock on a scale that surprises most visitors. The surrounding landscape is big and open — rolling farmland, river valleys, and boreal forest stretching to the horizon in every direction. The Northern Lights are a spectacular winter attraction, and the Peace Country's dark skies make for exceptional stargazing year-round.
