Fort Nelson
The last frontier — a northern BC gateway town on the Alaska Highway, surrounded by boreal wilderness and big sky country.
Fort Nelson is the northernmost community of any size in BC, sitting at Mile 300 of the Alaska Highway in the vast boreal forest of the Northern Rockies region. It is a genuine frontier town — a place where the wilderness is not a backdrop but a presence, where the sky is enormous, and where the pace of life reflects the self-reliance required to live this far north. The town serves as the gateway to the Northern Rockies, one of the most spectacular and least-visited wilderness regions in BC. Stone Mountain Provincial Park and Muncho Lake Provincial Park, both on the Alaska Highway north of Fort Nelson, protect landscapes of extraordinary beauty — jagged limestone peaks, turquoise glacial lakes, and vast boreal forests that stretch to the horizon. The Alaska Highway itself, built in just eight months in 1942 as a military supply route, is one of the great road trips in North America, and Fort Nelson is a natural base for exploring it. The Fort Nelson Heritage Museum is one of the best small museums in northern BC, with an outstanding collection of Alaska Highway construction artifacts, Indigenous cultural items, and natural history exhibits. The museum's collection of vintage vehicles and equipment from the highway's construction era is particularly impressive. Wildlife is abundant throughout the region. Stone sheep, mountain goats, moose, caribou, black bear, and grizzly bear are all commonly seen along the Alaska Highway, and the rivers and lakes offer excellent fishing for Arctic grayling, lake trout, and northern pike. The Northern Rockies Lodge on Muncho Lake is one of the finest wilderness lodges in BC.
