Kelowna
The wine capital of BC — sun, beaches, and world-class Okanagan vineyards.
Kelowna is the largest city in the Okanagan Valley and the undisputed wine capital of British Columbia. Sitting on the eastern shore of Okanagan Lake, surrounded by vineyards, orchards, and beaches, it is a city that has transformed itself over the past two decades from a quiet agricultural town into one of the most desirable destinations in Canada. The Okanagan wine industry has its heart in Kelowna, with over 40 wineries within easy reach of the city. Mission Hill, Quails' Gate, Cedar Creek, and dozens of other world-class producers have put BC wine on the international map. The Okanagan Wine Festival, held every fall, is one of the largest wine events in Canada and draws visitors from across the country. Okanagan Lake is the centrepiece of Kelowna's outdoor life — City Park beach is one of the finest urban beaches in BC, and the lake offers sailing, kayaking, paddleboarding, and houseboating throughout the summer. Big White Ski Resort, just 45 minutes east, is one of BC's premier ski destinations, famous for its champagne powder and extensive terrain. The Kettle Valley Rail Trail offers cycling through spectacular Okanagan scenery, including the famous Myra Canyon trestles — one of the most dramatic cycling experiences in BC.

Myra Canyon Trestles
Eighteen historic wooden trestle bridges and two tunnels spanning the dramatic canyon walls above Kelowna — part of the legendary Kettle Valley Railway built between 1910 and 1916. The 12 km return trail along the old rail bed crosses bridges suspended high above the canyon floor, with sweeping views of the Okanagan Valley below. Rebuilt after a devastating wildfire in 2003, the trestles are a remarkable feat of early 20th-century engineering.
Tip: The trail is accessible by bicycle as well as on foot — rent a bike in Kelowna and make a full day of it. The canyon is exposed and can be very hot in summer; start early and bring plenty of water.
