Langley
The Horse Capital of BC — heritage, farmland, and the birthplace of British Columbia.
Langley is one of the most distinctive communities in Metro Vancouver, a place that has managed to preserve its agricultural and equestrian heritage while growing into a thriving city. Known as the Horse Capital of BC, the Langley area is home to more horses per capita than almost anywhere else in Canada, with hundreds of equestrian facilities, riding clubs, and horse farms spread across the Langley Township. Fort Langley National Historic Site is one of the most important heritage destinations in BC — the original Hudson's Bay Company trading post established in 1827 that became the birthplace of British Columbia. On November 19, 1858, the Colony of British Columbia was proclaimed at Fort Langley, making it the founding moment of the province. The fort has been beautifully restored and offers living history demonstrations, costumed interpreters, and a fascinating window into the fur trade era. Langley's historic downtown has a charming small-town character with independent shops, restaurants, and a strong sense of community. The Nicomekl and Salmon rivers offer fishing and nature walks, and the Aldergrove Lake Regional Park provides swimming and hiking just minutes from the city. The Fraser Valley farmland surrounding Langley produces berries, vegetables, and dairy products that supply much of Metro Vancouver.
