Oliver
The Wine Capital of Canada — where the desert blooms with world-class vineyards.
Oliver proudly calls itself the Wine Capital of Canada, and the claim is well-founded. The town sits at the heart of the South Okanagan wine country, surrounded by some of the finest vineyards in the country. The combination of hot summers, cold winters, and the unique terroir of the Okanagan desert creates conditions that produce wines of extraordinary quality and character. The Golden Mile Bench, a designated wine appellation just south of Oliver, is home to some of BC's most celebrated wineries. Road 13, Tinhorn Creek, and Hester Creek estates are among the producers that have put Oliver on the international wine map. The Oliver Wine Village, a pedestrian-friendly wine hub in the town centre, makes it easy to explore the local wine scene on foot. Beyond wine, Oliver offers excellent hiking in the South Okanagan desert, with the McIntyre Bluff — a dramatic basalt cliff above Vaseux Lake — offering one of the finest viewpoints in the Okanagan. Vaseux Lake is a designated wildlife sanctuary and one of the best birdwatching destinations in BC, home to California bighorn sheep, canyon wrens, and white-headed woodpeckers. The Okanagan River channel cycling trail connects Oliver to Osoyoos through stunning desert scenery.

Vaseux Lake
A small, shallow lake on the South Okanagan desert floor that is one of the most productive wildlife watching spots in BC. California bighorn sheep graze on the cliffs above the highway; white-headed woodpeckers, canyon wrens, and Lewis's woodpeckers nest in the ponderosa pines; trumpeter swans and Canada geese winter on the water. The lake is a National Wildlife Area and a Canadian Heritage River — a protected oasis in the middle of wine country. A short boardwalk trail leads to a bird blind with views across the marsh. Completely free, completely uncrowded.
Tip: Dawn and dusk are the best times for wildlife. Bring binoculars — the bighorn sheep on the cliffs above the highway are visible year-round but easiest to spot in winter when the vegetation is low.
