Osoyoos
Canada's warmest lake — where the desert meets the water in BC's sunny south.
Osoyoos sits at the southern tip of the Okanagan Valley, right on the US border, in the only true desert in Canada. Osoyoos Lake is the warmest freshwater lake in Canada, reaching temperatures of 24°C or more in summer, and the town's combination of desert scenery, warm water, and world-class wine country makes it one of the most unique destinations in BC. The Osoyoos Desert Centre protects a remnant of the antelope-brush ecosystem that once covered much of the South Okanagan — a fragile and fascinating landscape that supports species found nowhere else in Canada, including rattlesnakes, burrowing owls, and tiger salamanders. The NK'Mip Desert Cultural Centre, operated by the Osoyoos Indian Band, offers an extraordinary window into the culture and history of the Syilx people who have called this desert home for thousands of years. The wine scene around Osoyoos is exceptional — Spirit Ridge Hyatt, Burrowing Owl, and NK'Mip Cellars (the first Indigenous-owned winery in North America) are among the world-class producers in the area. Osoyoos Lake offers swimming, boating, and paddleboarding in water that feels more like the Mediterranean than Canada.

Hidden Gems near Osoyoos(1)
Spotted Lake
A sacred First Nations site and one of the world's most unusual natural phenomena — a shallow lake that transforms into a mosaic of coloured mineral pools each summer as the water evaporates. The circles range from pale yellow to deep green and blue depending on their mineral content, creating a landscape that looks more like abstract art than nature. The lake is visible from the highway and holds deep spiritual significance to the Syilx Okanagan people.
Tip: View the lake respectfully from the roadside pullout on Highway 3 — the lake is on private and First Nations land. Early morning light in July and August shows the colours at their most vivid.
