Parksville

The warmest ocean water in Canada — a beloved Vancouver Island beach town with golden sands and family-friendly charm.

Parksville is a beach town on the east coast of Vancouver Island, about 35 kilometres north of Nanaimo, that has been one of BC's most popular family vacation destinations for generations. The town's beaches — particularly the broad, sandy expanse of Parksville Beach — are famous for having the warmest ocean water in Canada, a result of the shallow bay that allows the water to heat up to swimming temperatures in summer. At low tide, the beach at Parksville extends for hundreds of metres, creating a vast expanse of warm, shallow water that is perfect for children. The annual Parksville Beach Festival in July and August is one of the most popular community events on Vancouver Island, featuring sand sculpting competitions, live music, and family activities that draw visitors from across BC. The Rathtrevor Beach Provincial Park, just south of Parksville, is one of the most popular provincial parks on Vancouver Island. The park's campground is consistently among the most sought-after in BC, and the beach and forest trails provide excellent recreation for all ages. The park is also an important habitat for the annual herring spawn, which attracts thousands of birds and marine mammals to the bay in spring. The Parksville area has a strong arts and culture scene, with the Parksville Community and Conference Centre hosting a range of events and the surrounding area supporting numerous galleries and studios. The Englishman River Falls Provincial Park, just west of Parksville, offers beautiful waterfall hiking in a forested canyon.
