Prince George

The Northern Capital — BC's gateway to the north and the heart of the Cariboo.

Prince George is the largest city in northern BC and the undisputed hub of the province's vast northern interior. Sitting at the confluence of the Fraser and Nechako rivers, it is a city of 75,000 that serves as the commercial, educational, and cultural centre for a region the size of many European countries. The city has a strong industrial heritage rooted in forestry and pulp milling, but Prince George has diversified significantly over the past two decades. The University of Northern BC is one of Canada's finest small universities, and the city's arts and culture scene has grown considerably, with the Two Rivers Gallery, the Prince George Symphony Orchestra, and a vibrant live music scene. The surrounding landscape is spectacular — the Nechako Plateau stretches in every direction, covered in boreal forest, rivers, and lakes that offer world-class fishing, hunting, and outdoor recreation. The Ancient Forest near McBride, accessible from Highway 16, protects a remarkable stand of old-growth inland temperate rainforest with cedar trees over 2,000 years old. The Forests for the World trail system within the city offers hiking and mountain biking through mature forest just minutes from downtown.

Natural Wonder

Ancient Forest / Chun T'oh Whudujut

An inland temperate rainforest — one of the rarest ecosystems on Earth — just 115km east of Prince George. The Ancient Forest protects a stand of western red cedars up to 2,000 years old, their massive trunks draped in moss and fern, their canopy filtering the light into something cathedral-like. A fully accessible boardwalk winds through the lower grove; a steeper trail climbs to the upper forest and a viewpoint over the McGregor River valley. It's one of the most awe-inspiring short walks in BC, and almost nobody outside the region knows it exists.

Tip: The lower boardwalk is wheelchair and stroller accessible. Bring rubber boots in spring — the trail can be muddy. The forest is at its most magical in soft rain.
