Tips for Boating in BC

Everything you need to know before you hit the water

Book well in advance

Popular operators — especially Shuswap houseboats and Victoria whale watching — book out weeks or months ahead in summer. Check availability in spring for July and August dates.

Dress for the water

BC ocean and lake temperatures are cold even in summer. Bring a windproof jacket, sunscreen, and layers for any boat tour. Whale watching operators provide floater suits on Zodiac tours.

Fishing licences are required

A BC freshwater or saltwater fishing licence is required for all fishing activities. Purchase online at the BC government website before your trip — guides cannot provide licences.

No licence needed for most rentals

Most boat rental operators do not require a boating licence for vessels under 10 horsepower or for supervised rentals. Check with your operator — requirements vary.

Respect marine wildlife

BC has strict regulations around approaching whales, sea lions, and other marine mammals. Stay at least 100 metres from orca and 200 metres from humpback whales. Licensed tour operators follow these rules automatically.

Fuel is usually extra

Most boat rentals charge separately for fuel. Ask your operator about fuel costs before booking — a full day on a motorboat can use 20–40 litres depending on the vessel and how far you travel.

Find a motel near the water

StayBC lists independent motels near every major boating destination in BC — from Sicamous and Kelowna to Tofino, Victoria, and the Gulf Islands.

Browse motels
