Heli-Skiing in BC

The world's deepest powder, the most remote terrain — BC is where heli-skiing was born

British Columbia is the birthplace of heli-skiing and still the world's undisputed capital. The Kootenays, Cariboo, and Coast Mountains receive some of the deepest, driest powder on earth — and with a helicopter, you can access terrain that no lift will ever reach. This is skiing at its most pure.

The Kootenays
Up to 20m annually
Selkirk & Purcell Mountains

The Kootenays

The Kootenays are the heartland of BC heli-skiing. CMH Heli-Skiing — the world's first heli-ski operator — was founded here in 1965. The Selkirk and Purcell ranges deliver legendary deep powder, and operators like CMH and Selkirk Tangiers run world-class lodges deep in the backcountry.

  • ✓CMH Heli-Skiing — the original, operating since 1965
  • ✓Selkirk Tangiers — boutique lodge experience
  • ✓Deepest snowpack in the Kootenays
  • ✓Accessible from Revelstoke, Nelson, or Golden

Book 12–18 months in advance — Kootenay heli-ski weeks sell out fast. Stay in Revelstoke or Nelson the night before your fly-in day.

The Cariboo Mountains
Up to 18m annually
Cariboo & Monashee Ranges

The Cariboo Mountains

The Cariboo Mountains around Blue River and Valemount are legendary for their consistent deep powder and vast terrain. Mike Wiegele Helicopter Skiing has operated here for over 50 years, offering an unmatched combination of terrain variety and lodge luxury.

  • ✓Mike Wiegele Helicopter Skiing — world-renowned operator
  • ✓Blue River — small town, massive terrain
  • ✓Monashee powder — light, dry, and deep
  • ✓Valemount is a great base for pre/post nights

Blue River and Valemount have excellent independent motels — a great way to save on accommodation before and after your heli-ski package.

Coast Mountains
Up to 25m annually
Bella Coola & Tweedsmuir

Coast Mountains

The Coast Mountains receive some of the heaviest snowfall in North America. Operators in the Bella Coola Valley and around Tweedsmuir Provincial Park offer remote, uncrowded heli-skiing in spectacular fjord and glacier country.

  • ✓Massive snowfall — up to 25 metres per season
  • ✓Remote fjord and glacier terrain
  • ✓Truly uncrowded — very limited guest numbers
  • ✓Bella Coola Valley is a stunning destination in its own right

The Coast Mountains are the most remote option — plan extra travel days and embrace the adventure of getting there.

What You Need to Know

Book early

Top operators sell out 12–18 months in advance. January and February are peak powder months.

Skill level

Most operators require solid intermediate to advanced skiing. You'll be skiing ungroomed, variable terrain all day.

Avalanche safety

All reputable operators provide avalanche training, transceivers, probes, and shovels — and guides are certified professionals.

What it costs

Expect $1,500–$2,500 CAD per day for guided heli-skiing. Multi-day lodge packages offer better value and a complete experience.

Stay Close to the Mountains
