Whitewater Rafting in BC

Some of the world's best river runs flow through British Columbia

British Columbia is a world-class whitewater destination. From the thundering Class IV rapids of the Thompson River to the remote wilderness runs of the Chilcotin, BC offers everything from first-timer floats to expert-only expeditions. The scenery alone is worth the trip.

Thompson River
Class III–IVMay to September
Thompson Okanagan

Thompson River

The Thompson is BC's most popular whitewater destination — and for good reason. The canyon section between Spences Bridge and Lytton delivers relentless rapids through dramatic desert scenery. Most operators run half-day and full-day trips from Kamloops or Lytton.

  • ✓Jaws of Death rapid — the most famous stretch
  • ✓Stunning canyon walls and desert landscape
  • ✓Accessible for intermediate paddlers
  • ✓Multiple operators with guided trips

Book mid-week in July or August for smaller groups and better rates. Stay in Lytton or Spences Bridge the night before — you'll be first on the water.

Chilcotin & Fraser Rivers
Class III–VJune to August
Cariboo

Chilcotin & Fraser Rivers

The Chilcotin flows through one of BC's most remote and spectacular canyons before joining the Fraser. Multi-day expeditions here are bucket-list adventures — true wilderness paddling with no roads, no crowds, and unforgettable scenery.

  • ✓Remote canyon wilderness — no roads in or out
  • ✓Multi-day expeditions with camping on the riverbank
  • ✓Incredible wildlife — eagles, bears, and bighorn sheep
  • ✓Expert-guided trips available from Williams Lake

This is a serious wilderness run. Go with an experienced guide and allow at least 3–5 days. Williams Lake makes an excellent base before and after.

Kicking Horse River
Class IV–VMay to August
Kootenays

Kicking Horse River

Near Golden in the Kootenay Rockies, the Kicking Horse delivers some of the most intense whitewater in Canada. The Lower Canyon section is for experienced paddlers only — sheer walls, powerful hydraulics, and non-stop action.

  • ✓Lower Canyon — one of Canada's top expert runs
  • ✓Stunning Rocky Mountain scenery
  • ✓Golden is a great base with excellent motels
  • ✓Guided trips available for all skill levels on upper sections

Golden has great independent motels and is also the gateway to Kicking Horse Mountain Resort — combine rafting with a night or two of hiking or mountain biking.
