Hope
Where the Fraser Canyon begins — chainsaw carvings, mountain rivers, and the crossroads of BC.
Hope sits at the confluence of the Fraser and Coquihalla rivers, at the exact point where the Fraser Valley ends and the canyon begins. It is one of the most strategically located towns in BC — the junction of Highways 1, 3, and 5 makes it a true crossroads, and virtually every road trip through the BC Interior passes through Hope. The town is famous throughout BC for its extraordinary chainsaw carvings. Over 100 sculptures carved from tree stumps are scattered throughout the downtown core, created by local artists and depicting wildlife, First Nations figures, and scenes from BC history. It is one of the most distinctive public art collections in the province and a genuine reason to slow down and walk the streets. The Othello Tunnels in Coquihalla Canyon Provincial Park are one of the most dramatic short hikes in BC. A series of railway tunnels were blasted through solid granite in the early 1900s for the Kettle Valley Railway, and they have since been converted to a walking trail that winds through the canyon above the rushing Coquihalla River. The tunnels, bridges, and sheer rock walls create a setting that feels genuinely spectacular. The Fraser River at Hope is excellent for chinook salmon fishing, and the surrounding mountains provide hiking, camping, and wildlife viewing in every direction. Kawkawa Lake, just minutes from downtown, offers swimming and camping in a beautiful mountain setting. Manning Provincial Park, just an hour east on Highway 3, offers alpine meadows, skiing at Manning Park Resort, and some of the finest wildflower displays in BC. Hope has a welcoming small-town character, good services for travellers, and a community that takes genuine pride in its natural setting and heritage.

Sharon's Deli
Tucked right in the heart of Hope, Sharon's Deli is the kind of place that doesn't advertise — it doesn't need to. Locals have been pointing road-trippers here for years. Stacked sandwiches on fresh-baked bread, scratch-made soups, and a warm counter-service atmosphere that makes you feel like you've stumbled onto a secret. Whether you're heading into the Fraser Canyon, climbing the Coquihalla, or just passing through, this is the stop that turns a pit stop into a memory.
Tip: Go early — the daily soups sell out. Ask what's fresh that day and trust the recommendation. Cash is always welcome.
Othello Tunnels
Five hand-drilled railway tunnels carved through the sheer granite walls of the Coquihalla Canyon — one of BC's most dramatic and least-known walks. Built between 1911 and 1916 for the Kettle Valley Railway, the tunnels thread through the canyon with suspension bridges spanning the roaring Coquihalla River below. The combination of dark tunnel passages, emerald water, and towering rock walls makes this one of the most photogenic short hikes in the province.
Tip: Bring a headlamp or flashlight — the tunnels are genuinely dark inside and the contrast with the canyon light on the other side is spectacular. The walk is easy and suitable for all ages.
Hell's Gate Airtram
The narrowest navigable point on the Fraser River — where 200 million gallons of water per minute squeeze through a 35-metre-wide gorge, 180 metres below the Trans-Canada Highway. The Airtram descends into the canyon for a perspective that's impossible to get any other way: the roar of the water, the spray on your face, and the sheer scale of the rock walls above you. The canyon floor has interpretive displays about the Gold Rush, the CPR railway, and the salmon fishways built to help sockeye navigate the gorge. A genuinely thrilling stop on the drive between Vancouver and the Interior.
Tip: The Airtram runs April through October. Go in September when the sockeye salmon run is at its peak — you can watch thousands of fish working their way upstream through the fishways.
Coquihalla Summit Recreation Area
The Coquihalla Highway climbs from Hope to a 1,244-metre summit through some of the most dramatic mountain scenery in BC — a landscape of granite peaks, avalanche chutes, and subalpine meadows that most drivers pass through at 120km/h without stopping. The summit rest area has short trails into the alpine, views of the Coquihalla River headwaters, and in summer, wildflower meadows that rival anything in the Rockies. In winter, the summit is a world of snow and ice that feels genuinely remote despite being 2.5 hours from Vancouver.
Tip: Stop at the summit rest area and walk the short trail north — the views of the surrounding peaks are extraordinary and take only 20 minutes. Check DriveBC for road conditions in winter.
