Lytton

The Rafting Capital of Canada — where the Fraser and Thompson rivers collide.

Lytton sits at the confluence of the Fraser and Thompson rivers, one of the most dramatic river junctions in Canada. The two rivers meet here in a visible collision of colour — the clear green Thompson flowing into the silty brown Fraser — creating a natural spectacle that has drawn travellers for centuries. The Nlaka'pamux people have lived at this confluence for thousands of years, and their cultural heritage is deeply woven into the landscape. Lytton is known as the Rafting Capital of Canada, and the Thompson River above town is one of the finest whitewater rafting rivers in North America. The river offers everything from gentle family floats to heart-pounding Class IV rapids, and several outfitters operate from the area. The Fraser Canyon below Lytton is equally dramatic, with towering rock walls and the roaring river creating scenery that is unlike anything else in BC. Lytton also holds the record for the hottest temperature ever recorded in Canada — 49.6°C on June 29, 2021, a temperature that preceded a devastating wildfire that destroyed much of the town. The community has been rebuilding with remarkable resilience, and the spirit of Lytton remains strong.
